I saw online a compusa external hard drive on sale. It was $119.99 with an instant rebate of 20 and then a mail in rebate of 50. I went to the local store and found the hard drive. Below it there was a slip of paper listing the price as $119.99, $20 instant rebate, $50 mail in rebate and in big font the final price as $49.99. I took the hard drive and went to checkout. The girl at the counter saw the box entered something and I saw in the billing monitor $452 displayed. I asked what is this price and showed her the price sticker of $119.99 on the box. Then she entered something else and then it printed everything with a bill of $119.99 plus sales tax.

I asked where is the instant rebate. She said this is the price in the box. I told her that there was slip of paper advertised in the area where the box was with a instant rebate of $20 and a mail in rebate of $50. Without hesitation she added this price is after $20 rebate. Then I explained to her how the price was listed there and that $119 is the full price and not with rebate. Again with no hesitation she said that is wrong.

I just went to the place where I took the hard drive and brought to her the piece of paper which gave all the calculations. Then she took us to the customer service which was a different department. First statement from them was, this price is after rebate. Then we asked how does the final price $49 come when their $119 already had a $20 rebate. Finally the customer service person saw the math in the slip of paper and then realzied there has to be some mistake. She then made us return the drive and then resold it with the rebate.

Next time I have to watch whether their billing and additions are ok too. Above all I don’t understand this instant rebate concept. If we pay them some money and they give back something why don’t they list a lesser price in the first place.

Last two weeks of september went in hunting for a house and moving. Only when you move you realize how much of junk you have collected slowly. It is hard to discard them too. In the middle of all this I went to play soccer and sprained my ankle. Luckily a good friend from India was here on a short trip and he helped moving all the heavy and junk stuff. Now more or less I am settled in the new house.

After moving to the new place took a while to setup the internet and routers. Bought wireless routers. Initially bought NetGear which was cheaper. But after putting the adapter cards into the PC it worked for the first time. After a shutdown the PC never came back alive. Removed the card and everything was ok. Returned NetGear and bought linksys. That worked without such big troubles. But now and then the adapter card does’nt like the router and drops connections. It is annoying while playing online chess. Searched online for the solutions. There are lots of suggestions but no one has given one single solution which always worked. Currently I am trying to stop the windows wirelss zero config service after I get connected. That seems to work for now.

Then started the long time plan of moving my blog site. One day while browsing saw this .name domain extension for sale and checked for navan.name. It was available. So bought it immediately since no other domain extensions are available. .name registering conditions are interesting. It should be your name, nick name or name of some character copyrighted by you. I don’t know how they would check nick names. Anyways I registered navan.name and then downloaded everything from old server and uploaded here. Exported all sql tables and imported them here. I initially thought all config stuff are in files. But some of them were in tables too. After fixing them now it is almost completely transferred.

I have moved my house as well as my blog in last one month. Need to fix some minor details about links in the new site. I will write more after fixing all those.
