Finally made my TamilEdit extension install properly with Firefox 0.9. The reason for delay was because of this page and this page. Both the pages talk about writing extensions for Firefox 0.9. But only one of them is correct. I followed the wrong one and while changing to the new, missed one word. Besides I was using Iceows to compress my files. The compressed files were read properly by Firefox 0.8 but 0.9 gave archive read error code. (Note: only error code, you have to hunt for the message.). After changing my zip program to 7-zip it said install-ajd.rdf was malformed. Then after finding the correct extension format TamilEdit installed correctly. Still there are problems like, while starting TamilEdit only the second attempt comes clean. Hope I Can figure that out soon.
I was browsing the TV and stumbled upon the documentary Winged Migration. It is wonderful. If you like birds or simply love nature you should watch this. Stunning photography. You will become one of the birds. They follow variety of bird migrations in all 7 continents. I did not see it from start. I think I saw only last half hour. They followed birds to Africa. Next, they showed some parrots in amazon. They followed some parrots flying over amazon. A boat was coming in front. The music turns a bit slow and sad. As the boat comes closer you see lots of cages of birds and small animals. A parrot is trying to open the latch of one of the cage. It is successful using its beak. It comes out and flies away free. Somewhere else there are some penguins walking like big guys. They land on a shore, lay eggs and some baby penguins emerge. A kite comes and takes the baby right in front of them. The penguins were helpless and just shout at the kite watching their baby being pulled away. There are also lots of happy love dancing of birds.
I do not know the names of most of the birds. You do not need them to enjoy the documentary. This documentary is not for information.
I cannot wait to watch the full documentary.
Got a gmail invite and it landed in the bulk mail folder of my yahoo mail. If the inviter has not told me that he has sent one I would have just emptied my bulk mail folder without looking. I am not happy just because of the 1GB. Now I can get out of all the fancy flash and animated ads and read my mails without getting distracted. I would be happy even with 1 MB if it is pure text. Gmail is definitely lot faster too. Gmail has much cleaner interface and I personally like the VI like keyboard shortcuts.
Anyways I have to have the usual rant again against the web ads. There are ads in the television. That does not affect me that much. In television some thing is always moving and there is always action. If there is nothing moving then it is not fit for television. In the same lines if there is a brief period of ads which are also usually interesting it is not that annoying. You can bear with it or close your eyes till it gets over.
But it is ridiculous to have something jumping up and down when you are reading some text in the webpage. Why cannot they have simple non-interfering ads like google. It is also pretty obvious that everybody who browses hates the jumping ads. One of the popular extensions for Firefox is Adblock. It filters most of the unwanted contents from a webpage. You can argue how can one view free content without having it supported by ads. But having an ad which is hated by the visitors defeats the purpose.
TamilEdit உபயோகிப்பவர்கள் Firefox 0.9 வெளியீட்டுக்கு மாறினால் TamilEdit இல் சில கோளாறுகள் வரும். ஒரு வார இறுதியில் இதனுடன் போராடி விட்டு கைவிட்டு விட்டேன். பழைய மாதிரியே இதை நிறுவலாம். ஆனால் Extensions சாளரத்தில் TamilEdit தெரியாது. Tools மெனுவில் இன்னும் TamilEdit வரும். முதல் முறை இதை ஆரம்பித்தால் எதையும் தேர்வு செய்ய முடியாது. இரண்டாம் முறை இதை தேர்வு செய்தால் ஓரளவு உபயோகிக்கிற நிலைக்கு வரும். Edit மெனு இருக்கிற இடத்தில் பெயரில்லாமல் வெறும் பட்டன் மட்டும் இருக்கிறது. மற்றபடி சாதாரண உபயோகிப்பிற்கு ஏதும் தடை இருக்கிற மாதிரி தெரியவில்லை. இதை TamilEdit இல் தான் எழுதுகிறேன். Firefox 0.9 இல் சில Extensions நிறுவும் முறையை மாற்றி விட்டார்கள். அதனால் இதை கொஞ்சம் மாற்ற வேண்டியிருக்கிறது.
If you have been using Firefox 0.8 and planning to move to Firefox 0.9, check whether your favorite extensions are available for 0.9. They changed the extensions APIs for 0.9. Unless the authors have updated their extensions, it may not work in 0.9. If it is not updated you can try using Show old extensions.
Too many problems with the current site. It was down the entire weekend. I cannot expect too much from an almost free hosting. I will try to get a domain name and hosting and move this blog there soon.
பாஸ்வார்ட் எப்படி பத்திரமாய் பாதுகாப்பது? உங்கள் பாஸ்வர்டை திருடுவது அவ்வளவு ஒன்றும் எளிதான காரியம் அல்ல. ஆனாலும் நீங்கள் கொஞ்சம் முன்னெச்செரிக்கை எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். உங்களிடம் உங்கள் நண்பர் பாஸ்வார்டை கண்டு பிடிக்கச் சொன்னால் முதலில் நீங்கள் என்ன செய்வீர்கள்? அவருக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த பெயர்களாக ஊகம் செய்வீர்கள். மனைவி பெயர், குழந்தை பெயர், பிடித்த நடிக நடிகையர் பெயர் இவற்றையெல்லாம் பாஸ்வார்டாக வைக்காதீர்கள். பாஸ்வார்ட் பாதுகாப்பாக வைக்க வேண்டிய ஒரே இடம் மூளை. எப்படியெல்லாம் பாஸ்வார்ட் திருடலாம் என்று பார்க்கலாம்.
1. ஏற்கனவே சொன்ன மாதிரி பிடித்த பெயரை வைக்காதிர்கள். அர்த்தமுள்ள பெயர்களையும் வைக்காதீர்கள். சில மென்பொருள்கள் இந்த மாதிரி அர்த்தமுள்ள பெயர்களை பாஸ்வார்ட் கம்ப்யூட்டரில் சேமித்து வைக்கும் கோப்பை கொடுத்தால் கண்டு பிடித்து விடும். இதை dictionary attack என்று சொல்வார்கள்.
2. பாஸ்வார்ட் டைப் செய்யும் போது பின்னால் இருந்து பார்ப்பது. இதை தவிர்க்க வேண்டுமென்றால் முதலில் யாரும் பார்க்கும் பொழுது பாஸ்வார்ட் டைப் செய்யாதீர்கள். நீளமான பாஸ்வார்ட் வைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள்.
3. கம்ப்யூட்டரில் அடிக்கடி என்ன ப்ரொகிராம்கள் பின்புலத்தில் ஓடுகிறது என்று கவனிப்பது நலம். இதை பார்க்க Task Manager என்று ஒரு மென்பொருள் உண்டு. எதாவது வித்தியாசமாக தென்பட்டால் அந்த பெயரைக் கொண்டு கூகிளில் தேடினால் அது என்ன மாதிரியான் மென்பொருள் என்று தெரிந்து விடும். தேவையில்லாத adware, spyware களும் குடி கொண்டிருப்பதை இது மாதிரி கவனித்து நீக்கலாம்.
4. கீ போர்டில் என்ன டைப் செய்கிறார்கள் என்பதை பதிந்து மற்றவருக்கு தெரிவிக்கும் மென்பொருள்கள் இப்படி பின்புலத்தில் தான் ஓடும். உதாரணத்திற்கு Ultimate Spy. உங்கள் கம்ப்யூட்டரை பலர் உபயோகிக்கிறார்கள் என்றால் இது மாதிரி மென்பொருள்கள் எல்லாம் இருக்கிறதா என்று அடிக்கடி சோதித்துக்கொள்வது நல்லது.
5. இதற்கு மேல் நேரடியாக இல்லாமல் இணையம் வழி சில வழிகள் உண்டு. இவை எல்லாம் கடினம். சாதாரணமாக நானும் பாஸ்வார்ட் திருடினேன் என்று எல்லோரிடமும் பீற்றுபவர்கள் எல்லாம் இந்த வழி தெரிந்திருக்காது. இது கடினம். இணையம் எப்படி வேலை செய்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு இணைய வழி மென்பொருளும் (ftp, telnet etc..) எப்படி வேலை செய்கிறது என்று தெரிய வேண்டும். இணைய வழியாக உங்கள் கம்ப்யூட்டரில் மற்றவர் நுழையாமல் தடுக்க FireWall போன்ற மென்பொருள்கள் உதவி செய்யும். ZoneAlarm இலவசமாக கிடைக்கும் ஒரு FireWall மென்பொருள்.
6. இதற்கும் மேலாக Sniffing (முகர்தல்) என்று ஒரு வழி உண்டு. நம்முடைய பாஸ்வார்ட் மற்றும் பல செய்திகள் இணையத்தில் பயணிக்கும் போது சாதாரண பிட்களாக செல்லும். உங்கள் கணிணியுடன் ஒரே network இல் இருக்கும் இன்னொரு கணிணி அதற்கு அனுப்பப்படாவிட்டாலும் இது என்ன பிட்கள் என்று முகர்ந்து பார்க்கலாம். இந்த வழியில் பாஸ்வார்ட் கண்டு பிடிக்கலாம் என்றாலும் அது மிகவும் கடினம். இதை தவிர்க்க பாதுகாப்பான (secure) வழியில் இணையப் பக்கங்களை திறக்கலாம். உதாரணத்திற்கு யாஹூவில் முதல் பக்கத்தில் உங்கள் பெயர் மற்றும் பாஸ்வார்ட் கேட்கும் பொழுது கீழே Mode: Standard | Secure என்று ஒரு கேள்வி இருக்கும். Secure தேர்வு செய்தால் உங்கள் பாஸ்வார்ட் மற்றும் பிற செய்திகள் encrypt செய்யப்பட்டு இணையத்தில் போகும். முகர்ந்து பார்ப்பவர்கள் யாரும் எளிதில் பாஸ்வார்ட் கண்டு பிடிக்க முடியாது.
மற்றபடி cookies இவற்றிலெல்லாம் பாஸ்வார்ட் இருப்பதில்லை. ஆனால் முடிந்த வரை தானாக உள்ளே நுழைவதை (auto logon) தவிருங்கள்.

மொசில்லா தமிழ் எடிட்டர் முதல் பரிசோதனை வெளியீடு தயார். இதை உபயோகிக்க இந்த முகவரியில் இருக்கும் கோப்பை உங்கள் கணிணிக்கு இறக்கம் செய்து கொள்ளவும். இதை கணிணிக்கு இறக்கம் செய்வது முக்கியம். அப்படியே நிறுவ இன்னும் இது தயாராகவில்லை. அப்புறம் உங்கள் மொசில்லா அல்லது, FireFox உலாவியில் tamiledit.xpi என்னும் கோப்பை திறக்கவும். அப்பொழுது உலாவி Tamil Editor நிறுவ வேண்டுமா என்று கேட்கும். ஆமாம் என்று சொன்னால் எங்கே நிறுவவேண்டும் என்று கேட்கும். FireFox உபயோகிப்பவர்கள் அதில் Cancel அழுத்த வேண்டும். (Cancel means it installs in application folder instead of profile.) நிறுவிய பிறகு எல்லாம் சரி என்று என்று ஒரு செய்தி வரும். உங்கள் உலாவியை மூடி விட்டு மீண்டும் திறந்தால் Tools என்னும் மெனுவில் TamilEdit இருக்கும். அதில் Edit In Tab தேர்வு செய்தால் புது பக்கத்தில் இந்த எடிட்டர் திறக்கும். தமிழ் transliteration முறையில் உள்ளிடலாம். எழுத்துக்கள் எல்லாம் யூனிக்கோடில் இருக்கும்.
தமிழுக்கும் ஆங்கிலத்திற்கும் மாற Edit மெனுவில் உள்ள Tamil Translit என்பதை தேர்வு செய்ய வேண்டும். இப்போதைக்கு கோப்புகளை சேமிக்க முடியாது. (சேமித்த கோப்புகள் யூனிகோட்டில் இருக்காது). அதை இனிமேல் தான் சரி செய்ய வேண்டும்.
ஏதாவது பிரச்சினை என்றால் எனக்கு தெரிவிக்கவும். மொசில்லா அல்லது FireFox அதற்கப்புறம் சரியாக வேலை செய்யாமலிருத்தல் போன்ற சில பெரிய பிரச்சினைகள் ஏற்பட வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. அதனால் இந்த வெளியீட்டை கணிணி பற்றி நன்கு தெரிந்தவர்கள் நிறுவுவது நல்லது.
