I finished the book Life of Pi some time last week. It was a brutal story. I wish I had not read the “alternate” story. Atleast not in the middle of the night. I should have settled down with the happy ending. I had to play an hour of chess after that to forget it and get little bit of sleep.

சில புத்தகங்களை எடுத்தால் அப்புறம் முடிக்கிற வரை கீழே வைக்கவே தோன்றாது. வேறு சில படிக்க வேண்டும் போலவும் இருக்கும். ஆனால் ஒரே மூச்சில் படிக்கிற அளவிற்கு விறுவிறுப்பாகவோ சுவாரசியமாகவோ இருக்காது. வீட்டில் நாலைந்து புத்தகங்கள் இருக்கும். ஒவ்வொன்றிலும் ஒரு புக் மார்க் இருக்கிறது. நிறைய நாளாக படித்து முடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று வாரத்திற்கு கொஞ்சம் பக்கங்களாகப் போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் போன வாரம் தான் டோல்கியான் எழுதிய The Hobbit புத்தகம் நூலகத்தில் இருந்து எடுத்து வந்தேன். ஆரம்பித்த பிறகு முடிக்கிறவரை வலைப்பூ முதற்கொண்டு வேறு எதுவும் தொடவில்லை. நான் படிக்கிற வேகம் மிகவும் குறைவு. பொதுவாக ஒரு புத்தகம் படிக்க 10-20 நாள் ஆகும். இந்த புத்தகம் மூன்று நாளில் முடிந்து விட்டது. அவ்வளவு சுவாரசியம், விறுவிறுப்பு. ஏழு கடல் ஏழு மலை தாண்டி மந்திர தந்திரம் எல்லாம் செய்து அரக்கனை கொன்ற குழந்தைகள் கதை மாதிரி தான். இது தான் இப்போது திரைப்படமாக வெளி வந்த Lord of the Rings க்கு முன்கதை. அதற்கு அப்புறம் Lord of the Rings கதையின் முதல் பாகம் படிக்க ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறேன். இனிமேல் தான் படம் பார்க்க வேண்டும்.

இப்போது வெயிட்டிங் லிஸ்ட்டில் இருப்பது The orchid thief, Life of Pi. The orchid thief, Adaptation படம் பார்த்த பிறகு படிக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்தது. Life of Pi போன வருடம் புக்கர் பரிசு வாங்கியது. படித்து முடிப்பேனா இல்லையா தெரியவில்லை. முடித்தால் எப்படி இருக்கிறது என்று எழுதுகிறேன்.

Most of the times what we say is redundant. We say a lot of obvious things. For example if it is raining most of the people would say it, like “Oh. it is raining” as if you did not know it. Usually an exclamation like “Oh”, “Oh God” or “Oh my” gets attached to these obvious statements. Weather is the most common subject for making useless statements. Good way to pick up conversation with strangers is to state such obvious things. Usually people follow with equally redundant statements. Like “the traffic is very bad here”. And a follow up, “It is always like that”. If you got a dog as pet, people will say “Oh you have a dog” as if you have been thinking of it as a bear.

I am slowly switching to Firefox browser. I like the tabbed browsing. When you have a document full of links, in IE, I keep opening new browser windows so that the current reading is not interrupted. By the end of the document I will have atleast 10 new browser windows open. With tabs I can open in a new tab and my taskbar reamains less cluttered. Also I can quickly see which page is loading and which has completed and switch reading accordingly. Though XP groups the applications it is a bit inconvenient to keep switching to different windows and read. Also Firefox displays Tamil correctly. I got the RSS reader panel also. It seems to be a bit slow compared to IE. But that seems to be bearable because of the features.
